Description
A grand antique Edwardian Albert chain, made up of large, solid gold curb links, each stamped 375/ 9ct. It has developed a lovely rosy hue over time and is complete with its original T-bar and claw clasps, with an extension of chain added to the end, holding a round medal, featuring a white and black enamel crest on the front, and Birmingham hallmarks on the back, dating to 1914.
Albert chains were popularised and named after Prince Albert, Queen Victorias consort in the 19th Century and were traditionally worn by gentlemen to secure a pocket watch to the buttonhole of a waistcoat. Today, they are also worn as stylish necklaces; a custom that was started by the wives of soldiers during the First World War who wore the chains as a keepsake.
This is a wonderful, substantial antique Albert chain, with a good weight and pleasing patina and can be worn as a traditional Albert or as a stylish statement necklace.
