Description

An exquisite antique Edwardian pendant featuring a rotating fob inlaid with a deep red carnelian on one side and a speckled green bloodstone on the reverse.

In the 18th and 19th Century fobs were worn as a decorative accessory to go along with a pocket watch. The seal was often engraved and used to stamp a person’s signature or a sentimental message or image in sealing wax on important documents.

Bloodstone is a form of Chalcedony and desired for its dark green colouring and speckled red spots which resemble drops of blood. Throughout history it has been considered a stone of healing and regeneration and in the Middle Ages was believed to be the drops of blood from the Crucifixion of Jesus Christ which fell to the ground and turned to stone.

The piece is all 9ct gold with an ornate top, engraved with scrolling foliate patterns. Its in excellent condition and complete with Birmingham hallmarks which date it to 1904.
