Description
A fabulous antique Georgian guard chain from the early 19thCentury made up of 18ct gold cable links, each printed with a small, dotted pattern to give them a lovely sheen and texture. Its held by a tube-shaped box clasp at the top also detailed with fine engraving with ornate cannetille flowers encircling it.
Guard chains were at the height of popularity in the 18th& 19thCentury. Both fashionable and practical, they were deliberately long enough to be tucked into a belt and were usually adorned with a pocket watch, lorgnette or muff.
Its remained in excellent condition and has a good weight and length, measuring 57 inches so it can be worn as one long chain or looped twice around the neck to make two festoons of gold.
