Description

This stunning antique Victorian Mourning Cameo brooch is Circa 1860.

Mourning jewellery in the Victorian Era mirrored the lives and times of the people who wore it. It was a souvenir to remember a loved one or a reminder to the living of the inevitability of death.

The wonderful Cameo is set in Bullmouth Shell and depicts a Bacchante lady; a follower of the Greek God Bacchus, with detailed Vine leaves and a pine cone displayed in her long ringlets.

Bullmouth Shell has been popular for many years as a base for Cameo carvings for its beautiful natural patterning which takes expert skill to carve.

The back of the brooch displays a glass window which contains a magnificent woven hair bouquet which is adorned with Flowers and Pearls.

The Cameo and Glass window are fitted in a lovely swivel gallery which rotates so that it can be worn both ways.

Displayed in a wonderfully designed Victorian gallery, set in Silver and Gilded in 18ct Yellow Gold.

Purchased in London and steeped in English history. The brooch is a truly stunning work of art and looks fabulous when worn.

Weighs 35.9 grams.

Measures 54mm across x 63mm down.

Cameo measures 44mm across x 52mm.
