Description

An exquisite Antique mid-Victorian Cameo brooch made Circa 1860. The cameo has been hand-carved from an irregular-shaped Bullmouth shell and depicts a scene from Greek mythology in which Zeus in the form of an Eagle drinks from the cup bearer Ganymede, who was considered the most beautiful of all Mortals.

Cameos have been carved since ancient times and saw a revival during the Victorian era due to Queen Victorias fascination with the pieces. Bullmouth Shell was often used as a base for Cameos for its beautiful natural patterning which takes expert skill to carve.
The cameo is claw set in an ornate Base Metal frame with fabulous scrolling, foliate metalwork complete with a safety chain. It is steeped in Victorian history and a true work of art.
