Description
An exquisite antique Scottish brooch from the mid-Victorian era (Circa 1860) featuring a series of square natural agates set out along an elongated gallery in a wonderful plaid design. Each displays its own unique colour and striped patterning and is held in a golden pinchbeck frame, detailed with ornate, foliate engraving.
Scottish Pebble jewellery was at the height of popularity in the mid-1800s and saw traditional Celtic designs decorated with an abundance of coloured agates and granites. It was a personal favourite of Queen Victorias whose frequent trips to Balmoral Castle saw her return with many beautiful souvenirs that influenced the trend across Britain.
The piece has remained in great condition and displays skilled workmanship throughout with a slate back and strong pin on the reverse to hold it securely.
