Swallows are known to mate for life and said to always return home to the nest, making them a powerful symbol of everlasting love and faithfulness. They were especially popular in the Victorian era and gifted as romantic tokens by lovers during long periods of separation.
Ivy was another romantic motif representing a loving, unbreakable bond, as in the Victorian rhyme Close clings the ivy to the tree, so in my heart I cling to thee.
